Not a day to day lens.
Ok. First of this is a creative lens. So not an everyday lens. It does take a bit of getting used to. And the fact that when you stop down you potentially end up looking through a dark view finder has draw backs. Optically the image is sharp. I love the fact that this lens has rotary f-stop adjustment. Unlike the composer, where you have to manually drop in reduction discs to change stops. fiddly at best and not ideal in the field. So a big move forward there. My only real concern with this lens. And I have not noticed anyone else mention this. Is fringing. This lens suffers really badly with purple fringing. The only way to remove this is in post editing. And even suites like Lightroom. still don't do the job right. So if the image was to be used in an editorial. There would be potentially quite a job in hand. Cleaning up the image. Unless the image was of cause going mono. This said. I have created some nice portrait shots. And still glad I have it in my kit. I gave this 4 out of 5 as the fringing issue bugs me.

tilt and shift that
had a lens baby for a while now, and wanted a 3rd optic, was originally planning on getting the sweet 35, but im so glad i got this, it has so many more abilities, and is so much nicer to use, would maybe recoment a Composer Pro body though as the normal composrer itsnt really strong enough to support the weight of the glass, but other than this i love it will be shooting it more soon

See in a new way!
Love it! Takes a little getting used to but worth persevering with as it can create some superb photos!

What a lens!!
I have to say, I never expected this to be as sharp as it is. When no tilt is added it's sharp edge to edge. In fact, it's sharper than any of my Nikon primes and that's even at 2.8!! The out of focus elements are beautiful and dreamy then adding a bit of tilt with the Composer Pro is where the magic is. On my D610 this is a truly stunning lens for portraits, macro and landscape.

A fun and affordable way to explore tilt-shift photography
The Lensbaby Edge 80 Optic is one of Lensbaby's "swappable" optics for its line of lenses. It has a focal length of 80mm and features a 12-blade aperture with a range from f/2.8 through f/22. It can function as a regular 80mm f/2.8 lens when facing forward on your camera, but this optic's special feature is that it allows you to employ the usual Lensbaby bend and tilt to reposition your plane of focus along any point not parallel with your camera's sensor plane. The usual Lensbaby lens tilt allows you to place the point of focus (with varying diffusion all around that point) but did not allow you to change the plane of focus itself. With this optic you can put a "slice of focus" through your image in creative ways. For example, you can highlight a certain aspect of the photo (such as producing a portrait where the eyes are in sharpest focus and everything else is softly blurred), or you can create the "false miniature" effect where the objects photographed take on the appearance of miniature scale models. The optic also has a close focus mode that will allow a close focus distance of 17".There is a bit of learning curve for this optic. Expect to play around for bit before you get the hang of it. There are some good video tutorials on the Lensbaby site. I included a couple of example photos with this review. You don't need to swap lenses to get back to "normal." As I mentioned earlier, the Edge 80 behaves like a normal 80mm lens when you aren't employing any of its tilt features. The aperture ring on the optic adjusts smoothly, and focusing and tilt occurs on the lens body itself. The shift from regular focus mode to close focus mode is a little tight -- you have to firmly pull the front edge of the optic outward. But, I imagine that's as it should be to avoid it shifting by itself. My one source of frustration so far is in detaching the optic from the lens itself. Suffice to say you will need to review Lensbaby's instructions for this, and practice several times before you can successfully detach the optic. My first try took almost half an hour, which is not a delay you would want to experience in the field. I did get better with practice, but it's still a bit of tricky. Older hands might suffer more than younger hands. I've found in practice you can get by with swapping out other Lensbaby optics from the lens without detaching the lens from your camera, but with the Edge 80 optic, you really need to detach the whole lens first in order to get the optic out of the lens. That will allow you to get the best grip on the components when performing the detach maneuver.Note that the optic in this product listing is not sold with a lens. The Edge 80 only works with the latest line of Lensbaby Lenses (NOT the 1.0, 2.0 or 3G). You need at least one of the current Lensbaby Lenses to use this optic. The optic works with the Muse, Composer, Control Freak and Scout lenses; it can also work with the Composer with Tilt Transformer, but you need to buy the Macro Converters in order to use the Edge 80 optic with that lens. Note too that if you want true macro capability, you will need to buy the Macro Converters anyway, regardless of which Lensbaby lens you have (their earlier Macro accessories will not work with this optic).Normal in-lens tilt-shift lens are expensive ($1200-$2500). While the Edge 80 does not give you all the features of such a dedicated lens, it is a highly affordable alternative that provides enough capability for many tilt/shift needs. It's a great way to get into this type of photography without breaking the bank. Highly recommend.

Very nice optic, I hesitated a bit, but totally worth it!
This is not a cheap optic, so I was a little hesitant to buy the Lens Composer + This optic.Remember you cannot use this optic alone, you will need to buy the Composer Lens Baby first. So the total investment cost me around 700 dollars (bought 2 optics + Composer Pro). For a manual focus and something that to some might feel like "toy lens", it is very expensive. After receiving the lens and trying out, I am satisfied with the purchase. The optic feels solid. It is the best lens baby optic. The bokeh and tilt-shift effects are very fun to play with, and it does take amazing sharp photos. I mount on a nikon D800, and I can create many creative photos. If you want to expand your photo creativity, I definitely recommend this lens.

Good creative lens for hobbyist
If you already have the Composer Pro body, the Edge 80 is a good investment. I first got the Composer Pro with Sweet 35 and was never wowed by the results. After it sat unused for a while I decided to try the Edge 80, thinking I would return it if not happy. I immediately saw much more satisfying results. When tilted, you get a sharp (well, pretty sharp) stripe of focus that can be moved around the frame and the rest of the frame will be strongly blurred at f2.8 or f4. Most useful is a horizontal stripe or vertical stripe, but even a corner to corner stripe makes a neat effect because you can get objects both near and far in fairly sharp focus. This lens will create the "miniaturized" look that people seem to like. I found that for that effect it works best on my crop-sensor camera (7D) and even better with my 1.4 tele-extender attached when taking shots from my 28th floor window. That effect gets old really fast however. In my opinion, the much better effect is using selective focus to isolate or highlight a subject within the frame. For that purpose it works equally well on my 7D and my full frame 5DII. I don't really do portraits, but I can see how it might be put to good use for that purpose. It's a good optic to get the creative juices of a hobby shooter like me flowing. Probably not great for pros as results can be hard to duplicate and focus and exposure takes a lot of trial and error to get just right. An external live view monitor is very helpful to get focus right. It's very difficult to focus at small apertures when tilted due to viewfinder darkening, but the most interesting effects require lager apertures so most won't be stopping down anyway. Anyone who shoots architecture probably knows they need a real tilt-shift lens, which this is not. It is a tilt lens. It does not shift.Lensbaby offers other optics and accessories that will work with the composer pro but unless you already have the composer pro or are interested in all those Lensbaby options, a cheap tilt-shift lens from Ukraine is probably a good alternative at a price similar to the Composer Pro-Edge 80 combo. I will say that the Lensbaby is very well made, and the cheap tilt-shifts might not be.I have limited time to go out shooting and I hate getting skunked because the intended subject turns out to be boring or the light is wrong, etc. To make sure I always get some usable images I carry a macro lens when I go out. There's always an interesting bug or weed or pattern of bricks to shoot, no matter what else is happening. The Composer Pro with Edge 80 may replace my macro as my creative savior lens. It's compact and light, so much easier to lug around than the macro and I can almost always find something to shoot that will look cool with the selective focus.

Go For It - Tons of Fun !
Having a Blast with the Edge "80". Very different than the Sweet "35" & "50". Changes the way you will see and use your Composer. Just takes a little practice and experimenting. Do not be afraid to go after this optic. It'll be a great addition to your Lensbaby collection.
